SMS to any cell phone!

If you want to send a text message to a cell phone, but do not know the wireless provider, just send an email to teleflip.com, and it will relay the message where it should go. For example, if the number of the cell phone is 1002003000, you would send the message to:

1002003000@teleflip.com

P. S. This currently only works for Canada, US, Caribbean, Hawaii, and Guam.

Solution for java plugin 1.5 not working with firefox

If your Mozilla-based browser on Windows does not want to run Java applets, you might have tried finding the solution in forums such as this one:

Java Forums - java plugin 1.5 not working with firefox or netscape

There are many discussions and opinions there, but the simple solution is:

0. Close the browser

1. Go to C:/Program Files/Java/jreXYZ/bin (or wherever you installed the last version of JRE)

2. Copy all the DLL files that start with uppercase NP

3. Go to C:/Program Files/Mozilla Firefox/plugins (or wherever your browser is installed)

4. Paste the DLL files and let them overwrite the old ones.

Hilarious: Setting Prefs for the Mozilla Rich Text Editing Demo

Setting Prefs for the Mozilla Rich Text Editing Demo

Above link is actually not that hilarious, it is only silly. Firefox is such a great browser in almost every respect, but then you get this “feature”. Why not handle this the same as popups etc. - let the user allow a given domain to perform clipboard operations with a click or something?

What is really funny is that the first time you try to perform copy->paste in a rich-text field in Firefox, you get a warning - asking if you would like to review a page on mozilla.org that explains the issue. If you click OK, Firefox’es own popup blocker stops that window from opening!

You can, of course, allow popups from mozilla.org, but I recommend you first spend some time laughing. Laughing is healthy.

Koders - Open Source Search

Koders - Open Source Search lets you search the source code of many open source packages at once. Very handy when looking for a solution to some common programming problem, or an example of using some function.

It also has neat calculators that show you how much would it cost to develop a certain package yourself (based on the actual number of lines of code and person-months-per-thousand-lines you specify.)

PHP 4.3.10 & 5.0.3 released!

PHP 5.0.3 and PHP 4.3.10 have been released. Besides fixing some bugs (especially regarding (un)serialization), several serious security issues have been addressed.

Performance of the foreach() construct has been improved for PHP 4 (backported from PHP 5.) This is a welcome change, as foreach() is so much cleaner and easier to use compared to other loops, but it was also so much slower until now.

One for the Kingdom…

I must admit that I was right about Drupal :-) . Within weeks of trying it for the first time, I have two live sites based on it, and one more in the works. One of the live ones is kind of private, but here is the other one:

Kingdom Of Heaven Now (A website dedicated to encouragement of the Art, Literature and Culture of The Kingdom of Heaven on the Earth Now.)

It is made for a friend who wanted to promote her book and also help others promote their art if it is in the same spirit. So, feel free to contact me if you have something heavenly to offer :-).

It is only using several of the basic Drupal modules, plus the Taxonomy Browser for categories, and the eCommerce set of modules for the shopping cart. Almost no custom programming was required, even though this framework is often described as being too techy. I even persuaded a friend who knows no PHP at all to try it for his new “portal” (he is one of those people that buy domains all the time…) He managed to download, install, and customize it, including localizing for his language (Croatian) in a single afternoon.

RegExpEditor

If you ever got stuck creating a regular expression, get this neat little Windows app (from the creator of PHPEdit):

RegExpEditor

You have to play around a little to learn how it works, but it is VERY cool. Enter your expression (without delimiters) into the top box, subject below it, etc. If you turn on replacements, the result is displayed automatically as you modify the subject…
